Editing and sheets

Edit the active cell, work with sheet tabs, and understand selections.

Enter or replace a value

  1. Select a cell. Its address appears at the left of the formula bar.
  2. Type a value in the grid editor, or replace the contents of the formula bar.
  3. Press Enter to commit. For a formula, wait until any autocomplete choice is inserted, then press Enter on the completed expression.

To edit existing text in the grid, double-click the cell. Escape cancels an active formula-editing session. In the formula bar, non-formula values also commit when focus leaves the field; formulas require Enter.

Numbers calculate as numbers; text stays text. A leading = starts a formula. Changing a referenced cell updates dependent formulas.

Select cells

Click a cell to make it active. Drag across the grid to highlight a rectangle; row and column headers also support selection. The formatting toolbar changes the active cell, even when a larger range is highlighted. Do not assume every highlighted cell will receive the formatting change.

While editing a formula, clicking or dragging grid cells inserts references into that formula instead of changing the editing destination. Colored highlights help identify the references.

Work with sheets

Choose a tab below the grid to switch sheets. Choose Add sheet to create another sheet. A workbook imported from XLSX can have several tabs, retaining the source sheet names. CSV imports create one sheet.

The bottom right shows sheet size or the number of imported rows. Imported rows may appear in a filtered or sorted order; cell addresses still identify their original source positions.

Wait for imported rows

Imported sheets load visible rows in pages. A cell whose source row has not loaded cannot safely be edited. Wait for its data to appear before selecting it for an edit. Filtering and sorting affect the displayed order, not the source identity of the edited cell.

See formatting and history for undo and import and export for file behavior.
